Romney Marsh and Rye Harbour

Background

References GFF-0133 (Dungeness), GFF-0237 (Rye Harbour) and GFF-0238 (Romney Marsh) were amongst the original WFF references.

It is unclear as to which areas they refer… this post will attempt to draw some lines on the map!

The Designations

The Wider Romney Marsh Area
The Wider Romney Marsh Area

The wider Romney Marsh area consists of a number of discrete areas covered by the Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay SSSI – most of which are also subject to RAMSAR and Special Protection Area designation, while two areas (adjacent to Dungeness power station and Rye Harbour respectively) are designated as an Special Area of Conservation.

Finally, part of the SAC is also a National Nature Reserve and/or RSPB Reserve.

The GFF References

GFF-0133 – Dungeness

GFF-0133 Dungeness

The easiest one first! The designated areas of the Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay RAMSAR/SPA around Dungeness are clear and distinct, centred on the SAC/NNR/RSPB areas adjacent to the power station, extending along the coast to north of New Romney and west past Lydd.

Note: Only the SPA/SAC/RAMSAR (and NNR/RSPB) designated areas are included – any SSSI areas not further designated are NOT included.

The only issue is to determine where the western boundary is, as the RAMSAR and SPA designations continue along the Camber Sands dunes. To create an unambiguous boundary, the Jury’s Gap Sluice (and the outfall) shall be considered the western boundary.

GFF-0237 – Rye Harbour

GFF-0237 Rye Harbour
GFF-0237 Rye Harbour

GFF-0237 (Rye Harbour) is defined as the parts of the Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay RAMSAR/SPA west of the River Rother, and south of the River Brede.

This includes the areas also designated as part of the Dungeness SAC.

GFF-0238 – Romney Marsh

GFF-0238 Romney Marsh
GFF-0238 Romney Marsh

GFF-0238 (Romney Marsh) is defined as the remaining several parts of the Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay RAMSAR/SPA east of the River Rother and include the Camber Sands dunes.

Note: Only the SPA/SAC/RAMSAR (and NNR/RSPB) designated areas are included – any SSSI areas not further designated are NOT included.
The boundary between GFF-0238 and GFF-0133 is the Jury’s Gap Sluice (and the outfall) as detailed above.

Directory Clarification

The GxFF/WWFF Directory will be updated to clarify these designations as follows:

  • GFF-0133 – Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay RAMSAR/SPA – Dungeness NNR/RSPB/SAC
  • GFF-0237 – Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay RAMSAR/SPA – Rye Harbour
  • GFF-0238 – Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay RAMSAR/SPA – Romney Marshes

Team GxFF will consider the status of the remaining parts of the Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay SSSI which is not included within the RAMSAR/SPA designated areas.
